During normal times, there shouldn't be any loss from selling the rights. But during GFC, rights issues weren't fun. The moment the company announced a rights issue, the shares would drop significantly, so those rights were sold cheaply.<br /><br />Yes, I agree that REITs still have a role to play in retirement portfolios, and like you said, it isn't a one-way decision.
